Jimson weed abuse in IdahoA new wave of drugs are hitting the streets of eastern Idaho. They're extremely potent, highly dangerous, but worst of all they're legal.
Idaho Deputy Terry Pledger has seen just about every drug come through the juvenile court system in Pocatello, Idaho but up until a few weeks ago he had never seen the kind that sent several kids to the emergency room in drug-induced comas.
"was saying off the wall things, looking for little men running around, looking for cigarettes he was dropping, but he wasn't smoking."
From one kid he confiscated this bag of Jimson Weed. There's enough in there to kill 10 to 12 people. It's an herbal drug used Medicinally for asthma, whooping cough or muscle spasms. Side affects include: hallucinations and fast heartbeat - and it's so potent, you never know what you're getting.
"so one time you could get a bag of seeds that is extremely mild. The next batch you take could drop you that same day."
The worst part about this drug, it's legal. That's because it's an herb and not a controlled substance. In fact, it's easy to obtain. Internet sites are endless, offering Jimson Weed for as little as $15.00 dollars, but we found it cheaper in Pocatello, Idaho. We sent our photographer to a local herb store to buy some.

"if you ate this whole sack it'd probably screw your liver up. I would just stay low dose on it.”

Ten dollars and sixty cents, tax included, but it did come with a warning from the store clerk.
Clerk—
"go easy on it, man. Strong ****."
Idaho pharmacists at local drug stores are on the lookout for a different kind of drug abuse: Dextromethorphan, a common ingredient found in cough medicine.
"we noticed it disappearing off the shelves and we've caught quite a few kids stealing it."
Shaver says lately kids are using the internet to research cheap, easy methods to get high without breaking the law, but it's something Idaho Deputy Pledger wants to put a stop to. He's currently working on legislation that will make Jimson Weed illegal.
Deputy Pledge--
"we have to do something and quickly. It won't stop the abuse to a certain degree, but at least it will make the user think twice."
Idaho Deputy Pledge does say legal or not, if you are caught driving while high on Jimson Weed or any other drug, you will still be cited for a DUI.
