Idaho Conference Explores Health Risks Of Kids Exposed To MethBOISE, IDAHO - Hundreds of people from the fields of law enforcement, health care, emergency response and social work are meeting in Boise, Idaho this week to develop what could be the first statewide comprehensive plan in the nation to help children exposed to the dangers of their parents' drug addictions and home methamphetamine labs.
The first annual Idaho Drug Endangered Childrens Conference is exploring uncharted -- and chilling -- territory.
Experts have really just begun to look at the health implications for kids who grow up subjected to their parents' methamphetamine addiction and in-home drug labs.
The goal is to make sure agencies throughout Idaho are on the same page when it comes to dealing with and helping children found living in homes where their parents are manufacturing meth.
"We need to do the right thing for these kids," said Idaho Col. Dan Charboneau, director of the Idaho State Police. "We want to make sure they're not victims not only of what their parents have done, but also of what the bureaucracy can do."
Idaho hopes to have a statewide plan in place next year.
Pediatrician Dr. Angela Rosas, with the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, has treated kids exposed to meth.
She told the Boise, Idaho conference that the children live in an extremely dangerous environment. "The meth powder that comes out of these labs, or even by parents using it in great quantities, gets all over everywhere the children have access to, so getting the powder on their hands, into their mouths like little kids will do, can give them a really toxic poisonous dose."
Children are also at risk from vapors when the meth is cooked up inside the homes.
"Even then, in a different room in the house, they can get poisoned with the methamphetamine." said Dr. Rosas.
Dr. Rosas doesn't shock easily but says she can never get over the terrible conditions in which children of meth addicts are forced to live.
"They care nothing about their children," she said. "They're living in squalor and filth, with rotten food. They're malnourished, with horrible diseases on their skin."
